Max Planck Institute for Human Development - Center for Humans & Machines

The Center for Humans & Machines conducts interdisciplinary science, to understand, anticipate, and shape major disruptions from digital media and Artificial Intelligence to the way we think, learn, work, play, cooperate and govern.

Student Research Assistant | Human-AI Interaction – Development of Online Experiments on Human-AI Interaction

English

To complement this team, we are looking for a motivated Student Research Assistant that helps us to understand better how AI can influence human behavior.

Working field:

The Center for Humans & Machines (CHM) conducts interdisciplinary science to understand, anticipate, and shape major disruptions from digital media and Artificial Intelligence to the way we think, learn, work, play, cooperate and govern. Our goal is to understand how machines are shaping human society today and how they may continue to shape it in the future. The Center is comprised of an interdisciplinary, international and diverse group of scholars, and a science support team.

To complement this team, we are looking for a motivated Student Research Assistant that helps us to understand better how humans interact with AI. We are planning the development of an online framework that allows us the run controlled experiments on questions regarding human-AI interactions in game-like environments. In particular we plan to investigate sentiments towards algorithmic management and the ability to learn from machines. In a team of researcher, research assistants and freelancer you will develop backend and frontend applications, that integrate game elements and machine learning methods. Depending on your personal interest and skills, the work could also involve experimental design, statistical analysis, and machine learning.

Requirements:

Your responsibilities
  • Development of a python backend that integrates machine learning methods (Python)
  • Development of a web-based game interface (JavaScript / React)
  • Execute experiments using online participants pools (Prolific)
  • Process and analyze game-based behavioral data

Your profile
  • Enrolled in a Master's program at a German university
  • Experience in programming in Python and JavaScript
  • First-hand experience in Web development (JS, HTML, CSS, HTTP)
  • Experience with statistical methods, data visualization or machine learning is a plus
  • Knowledge of human experiment methodologies is a plus
  • Interest in behavior studies on human-AI interactionsciences, computer science, or related at a German university

What we offer:

  • Close collaboration with the CHM team
  • Comprehensive onboarding and time to learn new skills in an agile environment
  • Personal supervision by researchers in the lab
  • Involvement in scientific work related to artificial intelligence and ethics, and human-machine interaction
  • Room to contribute and realize your own ideas
  • The position is limited to 6 months with the possibility of extension
  • Salary: 13,95€ / hour

Our Offer
The Max Planck Society strives for gender and diversity equality. We welcome applications from all backgrounds.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

How to apply:

Please apply, including a motivation letter and CV without a photo, by August 15th, 2022 via https://career-chm.mpib-berlin.mpg.de/jobs/1895746-student-assistant-development-of-online-experiments-on-human-ai-interaction
