Die Mis­sion des Leib­niz-Zen­trums für Agrar­land­schafts­for­schung (ZALF) e. Das ZALF ist Mit­glied der Leib­niz-Gemein­schaft und unter­hält neben dem Haupt­stand­ort in Mün­che­berg (ca. 35 Minu­ten mit der Regio­nal­bahn von Ber­lin-Lich­ten­berg) eine For­schungs­sta­tion mit wei­te­ren Stand­or­ten in Dede­low sowie Pau­li­nen­aue.

PhD researcher (f/m/d) on busi­ness mod­els to pro­mote soil health

Working field:

The pos­i­tion is part of the work­ing group “Gov­ernance of Eco­sys­tem Ser­vices”. The cent­ral ques­tion of this work­ing group is which gov­ernance approaches allow for the tar­geted pro­vi­sion­ing of soci­etally desired eco­sys­tem ser­vices and biod­iversity object­ives. A spe­cial focus lies on fin­an­cial incent­ives and their inter­ac­tions with reg­u­lat­ive law and vol­un­tary cooper­a­tion.

In the con­text of the Hori­zon Europe pro­ject Nov­asoil (Innov­at­ive Busi­ness Mod­els for Soil Health) we offer a PhD pos­i­tion to ana­lyze pref­er­ences of con­sumers and farm­ers on dif­fer­ent soil-related eco­sys­tem ser­vices and the insti­tu­tional design of busi­ness mod­els to pro­mote soil health.

  • con­cep­tu­al­iz­a­tion and devel­op­ment of a research design to ana­lyze pref­er­ence on busi­ness mod­els to pro­mote soil health
  • invest­ig­at­ing con­sumers pref­er­ences for soil-related eco­sys­tem ser­vices in a bundle with other eco­sys­tem ser­vices and biod­iversity
  • examin­ing farm­ers pref­er­ences for cer­ti­fied nature con­ser­va­tion pro­jects for soil-related eco­sys­tem ser­vices
  • present­a­tion of research res­ults at national/inter­na­tional con­fer­ences
  • pub­lic­a­tion of res­ults in peer-reviewed sci­entific journ­als
  • col­lab­or­a­tion with other research­ers of the work­ing group in the field of pref­er­ence ana­lysis


  • excel­lent com­ple­tion of a Mas­ter (or equi­val­ent) in the field of eco­nom­ics, agri­cul­tural eco­nom­ics, nature resource man­age­ment, human geo­graphy, (rural) soci­ology or related sub­jects
  • strong stat­ist­ical skills and demon­strated exper­i­ence with stat­ist­ical pro­gram­ming lan­guages
  • exper­i­ence in con­duct­ing dis­crete choice exper­i­ment (DCE) is an advant­age
  • know­ledge on soil-related eco­sys­tem ser­vices is bene­fi­cial
  • team spirit, flex­ib­il­ity, high motiv­a­tion to work in an inter­dis­cip­lin­ary envir­on­ment and the abil­ity to work inde­pend­ently
  • sci­entific curi­os­ity and high interest in con­duct­ing a doc­toral thesis
  • pro­fi­ciency in both Ger­man and Eng­lish is required
