Research Assistant - 0.67 working time - salary grade 13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen - 1st qualification period (PhD candidate)

Working field:

Research on structure-function relationships of carotenoid-binding proteins, especially of the Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP)

  • Generation of cDNA constructs for protein and carotenoid production in bacteria by molecular-biological methods, site-directed mutagenesis, recombinant PCR
  • Carotenoid and protein production in bacteria, chromatographic purification and protein analytics
  • Biochemistry and mass spectrometry on carotenoids and carotenoid-binding proteins
  • Liposome preparations and experiments on carotenoid transfer between proteins and liposomes
  • UV/Vis absorption, CD and Fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy
  • Preparation of probes for small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering experiments (SAXS, SANS),
  • Structure-function studies on carotenoid-binding proteins
  • Writing/editing of scientific manuscripts for publication, conference and project reports
  • teaching duties (2 SWS) in practical courses and seminars in physical chemistry

Requirements:

  • Successful accomplishment of a Master‘s degree in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Biological Chemistry or Chemistry
  • Experience in molecular biology, protein biochemistry and chromatographic techniques (FPLC, HPLC, SEC, HIC)
  • Expertise in spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy

Optional:
  • Experience with mass spectrometric analysis of proteins and bioorganic molecules (ESI-MS, LC-MS), basic skills in NMR structure determination of proteins
  • the ability to work in a team and to cooperate
  • sufficient language proficiency to teach classes in both German and English is expected
