“EOSC EDEN - Enhancing Digital preservation strategies at European and National level“, with a focus on file format analysis

Working field:

The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology - Program Area A, Content Development and Metadata, Digital Preservation Team, is looking to employ a Project employee (m/f/d) “EOSC EDEN - Enhancing Digital preservation strategies at European and National level“, with a focus on file format analysis.

With a starting date of 1 January 2025 (or next possible date thereafter), subject to final project approval. The position is limited to the duration of the project and ends on 31 December 2027. The weekly working time is 39.80 hours (full-time). The position is suitable for part-time work. The reason for, and scope of, the role advertised are subject to final project approval. Provided that the personal requirements are met, the remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.

The EU-funded EOSC EDEN project aims to develop a framework based on data usage, value and quality that enables the identification of digital objects suitable for long-term preservation. In addition to a model for reassessment points along the data lifecycle, the project will develop and test prototype services and tools for the curation and long-term archiving of research data from various disciplines. As part of the project, the TIB is leading the work package "Data and process framework for long-term digital preservation".

Your tasks will include:

  • Analysis and definition of technical metadata and significant properties for different file formats
  • Development of scripts for extracting technical metadata and validating file formats against their standards
  • Interface development for queries and reporting via REST and SOAP
  • Conducting research and analysis of relevant technical literature
  • Independent creation of scientific texts in English

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a scientific university degree (Master's or comparable)
  • First experience in handling and analyzing various file formats
  • Knowledge of a scripting or programming language, preferably Python
  • Enthusiasm for technical-scientific topics with a strong application focus
  • Ability to independently write well-structured and comprehensible texts
  • Very good knowledge of English

In addition to these professional qualifications, qualities such as the ability to work in a team, creativity and enjoyment of working in an interdisciplinary team are valued.

Desirable additions to your profile are:

  • Current knowledge of requirements from research data management and long-term archiving for file formats and file-processing processes
  • Knowledge of German is an advantage, but not essential
