About us
The DLR Hacking Challenge project (DLR-SATHACK) is a research initiative of the Chair of Space Technology at TU Berlin, concerned with the cybersecurity of small satellites. The focus is on the development and execution of an innovative hacking challenge format that combines an online qualification round with hardware-close final rounds, in order to investigate real attack vectors on satellite systems. The project purposefully connects experts from cybersecurity, space technology, the CTF community, and government agencies to sustainably strengthen the space security community in Germany and Europe. Students are actively involved in development and operations, gaining hands-on experience with safety-critical space systems.
Your responsibility
- Technical lead for the setup of the satellite hardware testbed and associated IT infrastructure (CTF platform, servers, network) for the qualification and final rounds
- Development and quality assurance of challenge tasks (including binary exploitation, telemetry analysis, TM/TC protocols) as well as the design of realistic attack and defense scenarios based on real satellite hardware
- Overall coordination of the challenge execution (online qualification and hardware-close final) including participant communication, results evaluation, and lessons-learned documentation
- Supervision of student staff as well as participation in project coordination, budget monitoring, and reporting
Your profile
- Successfully completed scientific university studies (diploma, master’s degree) in in aerospace engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or a comparable field
- Excellent English skills (written and spoken); good German skills
- Experience in the independent planning and coordination of technical projects
- Knowledge of embedded systems and satellite systems (OBC, telemetry, telecommands)
- Experience with CTF competitions, ideally in an organizing or challenge-authoring role desirable
- Knowledge of RF technology, SDR, or radio communications (e.g. amateur radio licence) desirable
- Experience with PR, outreach, or science communication is a plus
